Dear Nomads,
I extend this invitation to attend our Open Garden at the historic Bell House this Saturday from 11:30 am until 3 pm. Transport yourself back to the times of George, when successful businessman and former Lord Mayor of London, Thomas Wright commissioned Bell House, on grounds that now include parts of Dulwich Park. Find out the original use of the bell tower and how we treasure the legacy of Wright through an endeavour to educate apprentices and alleviate the poor. Discover that Dulwich’s first casualty of The Great War was, in fact the son of a naturalised German as well as the House’s medical past. It used to be the residence of the master of Dulwich College resided here from 1926. Bell House became a junior boarding house of the College in the grey and dusty rubble following the Second World War and later would also house my father. In the year of my birth, the Dulwich Estate sold the property to private hands with a staggering 25-plus rooms covering over 12,000 sq ft. Since then the Bell House Charity has been created. It’s wonderful to see how Angus & Fabienne Hanton have returned the spirit of the house to its original purpose: to educate and benefit the community via continued lifelong learning.
We, happy volunteers, will be showcasing this brilliant South London charitable community project, the brainchild of the generous and innovative Hantons, who, in turn, are a well-respected family with deep ties to the area. It is a community project I have now had the pleasure of being involved with for over a month and I can see the positive impact it has had on myself, as well as the entire community of volunteers and guests.
No booking is necessary; one can simply turn up. A donation of around £5 is suggested per person, if one would like to support the project. Feel free to browse the curated gardens, and why not book yourself onto a pottery course in the coming weeks? Join us for tea, coffee and delve into the work that goes on at Bell House.
